VW Cross Blue: XL Tiguan with blue diesel plug-in hybrid
So far as we knew the VW Tiguan compact SUV. But there is still much more to outdo even the large Touareg. The new SUV concept Blue Cross offers the space of a van, 306 hp at only 2.1 liters average fuel consumption and an advanced Volkswagen design. This SUV not only offers space and comfort for travel, it even serves as an emergency generator. Its world premiere celebrates the new study at the Detroit Auto Show (14.01.2013-27.01.2013).
In the case of series production of the Cross Blue would enrich the model spectrum of a seven-seater Volkswagen midsize SUV the 5.0-meter class – but designed specifically for the U.S. and Canada. By comparison, the VW Tiguan is just 4.40 meters long and the VW Touareg only 4.80 meters. It appears to us a big act on many North American families still much too small. Meanwhile, concerned about efficient driving, Volkswagen is presenting the Americans to Cross Blue with a highly efficient diesel plug-in hybrid, which even enables pure electric driving and battery charging from a regular household outlet.
Design: Sovereign size for America
The Volkswagen painted in “Cross Blue Glass Flake” is 4.987 meters long, 2.015 meters wide and 1.733 meters high. With its large track widths of 1.686 meters and 1.696 meters behind the front, the newly designed 21-inch alloy wheels with tires in size 285/45 and significantly flared wheel arches of the Blue Cross stands confidently on the road. The sovereign gauges, the dynamic proportions with an equally long as wide cowl and large wheels emphasize the masculine appearance.
A contrast to the exterior paint in a stainless steel finish and running around running around the vehicle body applications form the bottom of the SUV. Moreover, has the Blue Cross a long hood with integrated air intakes for the engine, a similarly elongated roofline and a very short front overhang.
An important element of the design DNA of Volkswagen is the dominance of horizontal lines in the front and rear, the refined, the makers at Blue Cross. On the front end extends the grille panel, consisting of two solid aluminum struts and centrally placed VW logo, now as a 3D element right up to the headlights. These aluminum applications significantly shape the new, three-dimensional graphics of using LED technology, dual headlights and ultimately the entire front section.
Backwards increases the lines of the body silhouette slightly. These optical impressions reinforced one extending from the headlights to the taillights character line, which is towards the rear wider. As at the front, the designers refined the three-dimensionally shaped LED taillights also with aluminum elements. The rear lights are – stylized considered – in the form of an “E” shaped. Again, in stainless steel look was the succinct Volkswagen exhaust tailpipes. Since equipped with an SCR catalytic converter clean diesel emits no soot of Cross Blue shine, the exhaust tailpipes permanently.
SUV as an emergency generator:
Left and right of the maker of the VW Cross Blue endowed in the rear each with a “fuel door” from: on the passenger side is the filler for diesel and SCR tank on the driver’s side, however, under a flap two sockets. The first is used to charge the lithium-ion battery that can be connected to the second, for example, when camping appliances, such as coolers or light systems so that the Blue Cross in this case acts as a generator.
Power: Powerful driving fun with minimal fuel consumption
In the embodiment shown in Detroit merge the 140 kW/190 hp turbo-diesel (TDI), the new engine series EA288 and a 6-speed DSG (dual clutch transmission) with electric components. The latter include the lithium-ion battery in the center console and the front electric motor with 40 kW/54 hp and 180 Nm and the rear with 85 kW/116 hp and 270 Nm. System performance is Volkswagen with 225 kW/306 hp and up to 700 Nm of total torque. Thus equipped the large Cross Blue sprint in just 7.5 seconds from zero to 100 and achieved a top speed of 204 km / h.
The Blue Cross can be driven in different modes. By default, the Volkswagen is in the classic hybrid modes – the drive systems are used here automatically optimized, with as much as possible make the electric motors for propulsion. By pressing a button, the driver can also switch to Eco or Sport mode. In Eco mode, the system controls parameters such as the accelerator response and the air conditioning so that less fuel is consumed electricity respectively.
Offroad with electric propeller shaft: from the terrain
All four wheels are in the game, when the driver consciously activates the Offroad Mode. In this case, and at a low battery charge of the now supplied with energy via TDI front electric motor acts as a generator and thus solely as a power source for its counterpart on the rear axle. Because the energy to drive the rear axle “by wire”, and not mechanically flows is from an electric propeller shaft of the question. Due to the fact that the TDI off-road driving mode via the front electric motor, the rear-wheel drive also works with low battery charge.
Alone provides the TDI for propulsion, is the Blue Cross to pure front-wheel drive. Thanks to the efficient technology of the turbocharged four-cylinder engine with common-rail direct injection, the study proves even now as very economical. This is still an average fuel consumption of 4.9 liters per 100 kilometers excellent.
Interior concept: Ample space and maximum comfort
Volkswagen equipped the study with six individual seats (three rows). In a production version it would alternatively in the second row, and thus provide a total of seven three seats. However, the headroom is consistently very good. Front there are 1.077 meters, 1.020 meters in the second row and the third row 0.954 meters, ergo still nearly a meter.
Also conveniently located just legroom: In the second row, up to 94.7 cm available in the third, there are up to 91.7 inches. The last value underpinned that in the third row and adults survive long journeys comfortable. A comfortable entry and exit to the rear with a handle enabling slidable forward second row of seats.
Behind the third row, a 335-liter luggage compartment opens with a loading length of 60 centimeters. If you fold the back of the third row of seats, the luggage capacity increases to 812 liters of cargo space and the length of 1.387 meters. When folding even the backs of the second row of seats, luggage capacity increases to 2,000 liters and nearly the length of the cargo space increases to 2.230 meters. Finally, it is possible to fold, even the rest of the passenger seat, and then up to 3.110 meters long objects invite.
Optimal temperatures on board in the back, the integrated into the roof vents of the automatic climate control. The rear portions of the 4-zone automatic air conditioning can also control of the second row from.
